postal service. including the postmaster general. documents show the travel, $220,000, and others will cost $2.2 million. the hotels, $300 a night before the government discount. documents show beyond the meetings and golf there will be music, entertainment and a banquet featuring the foods of fisherman's wharf and china town. one group says they shouldn't do this. >> they need to be concerned and maybe be concerned about rationing back some of their activities. >> the post office said the conference in san francisco will make money by creating future business and new sales

lead. the postal service said they would have to pay for golfing and will shoulder other costs. >> reporter: organizers said it is designed to educate businesses about the services and products that are offered by the u.s. postal service. they earn $73,000 for every dollar they spent to send employees to a similar conference last year. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco's bomb squad shut down the financial district after a report of a suspicious package. it came in from the wells fargo headquarters leading to the closure between california and sacramento street at 8:00 a.m. this morning. they determined there was no threat and gave the all clear this afternoon. in the south bay, we have learned that search and rescue

crews have just retrieved the body of a hiker who died after falling off a cliff. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose's alum rock park where the investigation continues at this hour. robert? >> we are at one of the main entrances to the park and as you can tell, you can tell what kind of terrain they have been dealing with to find and recover the body. >> reporter: search and revue inside of san jose's alum rock park, a mission to retrieve a dead hiker reported missing on saturday and found by rangers sunday afternoon. there were a few visitors today who were surprised to hear about the death. >> like a family park but i wouldn't suggest going into an area you are not supposed to. >> he fell anywhere between 130

to 170 feet. >> reporter: what was he trying to do? >> we don't know. we don't know how he ended up where he is today. >> reporter: they are still investigating the fall as well but point out the terrain is off limits. >> the area where the events are right now used to have trails, but they have been closed for a long time. there are lots of signs saying, you know, saying stay out. >> reporter: that is why they are having trouble getting the body out. >> it is treacherous. and they are carrying a person, magnifies the dangers we face. >> reporter: again, as you see the view, you can tell how difficult it was for workers to get the body out. it is now being examined. at 6:00 p.m., more on the retrieval and the victim and reaction. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. some gun control experts

are criticizing dianne feinstein's weapons ban. she wants to ban buying and selling of 150 fire arms. more than 2,000 others models would be exemp. some are questioning that saying some of the fire arms can cause just as much damage as the banned ones. dianne feinstein said it was designed to make it clear the bill wouldn't effect hunting and sporting weapons. aurora colorado last july, the house passed new ammunition limits and expanded background checks. colorado republicans oppose the measure saying they restrict rights and won't prevent mass shootings. san francisco a&b singer put on a concert to draw attention to gun violence following the school shooting in connecticut.

[ music playing ] >> she held the concert in berkeley. the crowd included parents and children. she wanted to send a message to them and to kids all over the bay area. >> my purpose in doing this is so that our local kids know that the adult whose live in this community are there for them. you know, i was really moved -- moved is not an adequate word by the events at sandy hook elementary school. >> she hopes to hold more concerts to draw attention to gun violence. tree came crashing down on a house this morning before 1:30 p.m. in danville. the massive oak tree, 45 inches in diameter caused damage to the home and three vehicles. it is believed the tree had a disease that weakened its roots. it will take them a day and a

half to remove the tree. one of two people injured in a boat accident this weekend died from his injuries. ktvu's allie rasmus is here with more. >> reporter: one of the central questions to the investigation is figuring out who may have been at fault for this fatal collision. it happened saturday afternoon in front of a body of water known as raccoon straight. >> reporter: on saturday afternoon many people on it peninsula saw the after math of the collision before a golden gate ferry and a motor boat. >> it was crunched in the front. the windshield was broken and so the -- looked like the ferry boat came over the boat. >> the boat driver aand passenger were rushed to the doc -- and passenger were rushed to the dock.

>> he was bleeding. >> reporter: the passenger of oregon died from his injuries about an hour after the collision. we spoke to his co-workers who explained he was a aphraser in the bay area to -- appraiser in the bay area. investigators interviewed the boat driver who is still in the hospital. they can't reveal what the driver said. >> if the results show that someone is at fault than they could be held accountable. >> looking for any information at all, witnesses, pictures, video, that anybody had, if they could come forward to the coast guard. >> the golden gate ferry is back in service. the five crew members working on board at the time are also back at work but the captson on

cable connector and secure it for free. a man is dead after crashing his suv while trying to get away from san jose police. ktvu's alex savage tells us it began after a police officer says the driver tried to run him over. >> reporter: a high-speed chase in san jose ended with this violent crash around 11:00 p.m. last night. the 20-year-old driver was killed when it went off the road near 101. >> reporter: a tow truck pulled the suv out of the ravine. san jose police said he tried to run down an officer. two teenager passers were in the suv but both girls walked away from the cash. you can see the tracks where the suv rolled down the hill and where it came to rest was feet away from several houses.

he was studying when he heard the accident. he knew it was dangerous when officers moved in right away. >> i heard him say put your hands up. i immediately locked the doors and ran inside. woke everyone up to make sure. i don't know if they will be coming through. >> reporter: police say this started when the driver of the suv tried to hit an officer who was making an unrelated traffic stop. the suv its lights off as it came towards the officer. he shined his flash light. >> i noticed the driver of the vehicle was making contact with him and he drove towards him. he avoided being hit. >> reporter: the close call led to the pursuit that reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour. it ended when the suv veered off the road. investigators will run toxicology tests on the driver hoping to understand why he aimed his suv at a police

officer. in san jose, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. police at university of california, santa cruz sent out an alert after a woman reported she was beaten and raped yesterday afternoon on campus. officers say it took place on the upper quarry amphitheater and the classroom unit buildings buildings. the 21-year-old woman said she was visiting when a man attacked her. that was at 12:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. >> i think what was unusual about this one was that the victim did not know the assailant and it happened in the middle of the day. that is shocking for the campus. police released a sketch based on the victim's description of the man who raped her. he is a white man in 20s to 30s. 5'10", 200 pounds, black hair and a mustache and goatee. a battle may be brewing
